One tool that may help you in your travels, is the Pocket Light Meter app.

If you have a smart phone, you can carry this tool with you anywhere you go.

You can manually adjust your Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO to create the image you want.

Touch the screen to set Spot-Metering point, in this case, on the bright sign and building.

This light meter measures reflected light, and is perfect if you don’t want to calculate the changing Aperture and Shutter Speed in your head.

Touch the sky to Spot-Meter the sky, but notice how the building is now too bright and has lost highlight detail.

You are also able to take notes and add them to your photos as a Log Image.

The Log image shows:

  • a screen capture of the meter
  • Shutter Speed
  • Aperture
  • ISO
  • Date and Time
  • Location
    • Latitude
    • Longitude
    • County
    • State
    • Country
  • Nearby feature
  • Notes

This can really come in handy if you are at a location, without your camera, and want to come back and shoot it later.

The information the Log Note provides will help you determine what gear to bring with you when you come back.

Your Log Notes can be synchronized with your Dropbox or Evernote accounts as well.
